What Is the Most Dangerous Vehicle in America?
You can be an incredibly safe motorist, take every precaution and still find yourself injured in a collision with a negligent driver. You might think, “There was nothing I could have done to prevent this,” and you are probably right – nobody can control the actions of reckless drivers. But did you know that the type of vehicle you drive can actually have an effect on whether you experience minor or severe injuries in a collision?
Insurance company ValuePenguin released a study on which vehicles are more likely to be involved in fatal crashes in the United States. The main finding in ValuePenguin’s study is that the most dangerous vehicle in the United States is the Ford F-Series pickup truck.
About the study
Researchers analyzed data over a period of five years, and found that the Ford F-Series was involved in more fatal crashes than any other vehicle in the study – 10,845 incidents, to be exact. Using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), researchers analyzed crash numbers to determine which cars, trucks, and SUVS are most likely to be in fatal accidents and collisions. Other findings from the study include:
- Motorcycles account for 10% of fatal crashes, while making up only 3% of registered vehicles
- Passenger cars account for the most fatal crashes nationwide
- The worst vehicle in protecting occupants in crashes is the Ford Mustang
- Vehicle model years 2005 to 2008 accounts for the most fatal crashes
Top five dangerous vehicles in the United States
The study also revealed the most dangerous vehicles in America. The top five are as follows:
- Ford F-Series: 10,845 fatal crashes. As we said at the top of the blog, the Ford F-Series came in at the dubious top spot for fatal accidents. The F-150 model in particular accounted for 65 percent of all fatal F-Series collisions.
- Chevrolet Silverado: 7,718 fatal crashes. The Chevy Silverado is another large pickup truck, as well as one of the tallest pickups on the road. It also tops the list as the deadliest vehicle in Vermont and Arkansas.
- Honda Accord: 5,079 fatal crashes. The Accord is the most dangerous passenger car, according to the study, and also poses an elevated risk to occupants. It is also the deadliest vehicle in New Jersey.
- Toyota Camry: 4,734 fatal crashes. The Toyota Camry comes close behind the Accord with slightly less fatal accidents, but still in the top four.
- Ram pickups (all models): 5,897. Although all Ram models are included, the model year 2001 has the highest incidents of fatal crashes. However, the report did note the Ram has a lower risk of fatal injuries to occupants.
As for the deadliest vehicle here in Oklahoma? Just like most of the United States, it’s the Ford F-Series pickup truck.
